Shifting and Shaping the Future – Reflections from an Assistant ELOM Trainer

Ashley Manuels works behind the scenes to inform and reform policy to help children in schools. He has been with JET Education Services for almost 10 years and is currently helping standardise the curriculum for Grade R. This is his story.

BECOMING AN ASSISTANT TRAINER

“Sometimes I do get the opportunity to work with kids directly or indirectly, as long as I can make the life of a child better…And that’s my main goal, to help kids. Whatever sphere it is in…I help.”

“…So, you see, I have a purpose and a passion. So, my purpose is to help or to teach, and my passion is the arts. So, currently, I get to combine the two.”

REFLECTIONS FROM TRAINING ELOM ASSESSORS

Ashley highlights the importance of knowing your content and being prepared for the unforeseeable to the assessors he trains; “The tablets might freeze. There might be an incorrect [question]…So, as an ELOM assessor, you should know what question one is about, or at least the domain, and then, you know, the items that go with it. But then also, have your manual with you as a backup.” He further mentions that some assessors are apprehensive of the technological devices used, and that it is important to ensure that they are comfortable with using them.

When mentoring new assessors, Ashley emphasises finding your own unique way of doing things. “…don’t try to copy someone else’s way of doing things…Have your own way. Yes, learn from me as your trainer…But figure your own way out because I will gravitate towards you for you being authentic. So, number one, again, like I said earlier on, know your content, know your tools. And then from there, you bring in your own personality, your own way of doing things. But stick to the core of what you’re supposed to be asking. You must know your tool. So, don’t deviate from what you’re supposed to ask. Just bring in your own flair. And practise, practise, practise, practise, practise. Even if you have a hundred dummy forms, practise. That will help you.”

THOUGHTS ON THE THRIVE BY FIVE INDEX

“So, for the organisation that I work with, the buzzword currently or the buzz term that we are using in the office or that we talk about a lot is the Thrive by Five Index. So, everybody’s going crazy about the Thrive by Five Index. So, ELOM does have a place in society…It’s relevant. It’s needed. I’ve done it with my friends, their kids.” “I get to be part of this process…Shift and shape the future of our kids.”
