The experience and impact of being an ELOM assessor or trainer

ASSESSORS

Why become an ELOM assessor?

  • “I’m interested in the education level of the kids, understanding what they've been taught at school.” - Ntebogeng
  • “I’m an educator and I’m interested in the fact that we’re trying to better our education system.” - Tshiamo
  • “I believe that there's so much that I can do to change the way children are being raised in South Africa. More especially because I have children.” - Mbali Madida
  • “I love working with kids, so I just enjoy it. I thought it would help me improve my skills and help me better deal with children.” - Thomas Ledwaba

Experience as an assessor:

  • “Being an assessor needs someone who has a heart for children, someone who is a mother by nature, someone who has time, someone who has a heart”. - Mbali Madida
  • “It has helped me understand children.” - Mbali Madida

The future of ELOM and ELOM assessments in South Africa:

  • “I think ELOM is doing well. It's growing in South Africa. I think it's giving us parents an idea that this is what you need to do with your children at home. It gives teachers an idea that this is what you need to do with children at school…So ELOM works with children, parents, and teachers. I think in South Africa, it's growing.” - Mbali Madida
  • “When it comes to understanding the development of kids. ELOM has opened my eyes in the sense of accepting that we don’t develop the same way. But we can do something about that.” - S’thombe Sibiya

Trainers

Impact of being an assistant trainer on growth and professional development:

  • “For me, it's more about how I can still help. So, you see, I have a purpose and a passion. So, my purpose is to help or to teach, and my passion is the arts. So, currently, I get to combine the two.” - Ashley Manuels
  • “It is empowering. Actually, it has given me other ideas. Like, it has gotten me to a place where I feel like I can even grow further than that. And I hope to grow from here.” - S’thombe Sibiya
  • “So as occupational therapists, we are trained on how to assess and on standardised tools. So, seeing that happen, like seeing that take place, it's the most beautiful thing. And what was amazing for me this year was when we did the ELOM-D training…because I’m also learning sign language.” - Palesa Chauke

Thoughts on the Thrive by Five Index:

  • “So, for the organisation that I work with, the buzzword currently or the buzz term that we are using in the office or that we talk about a lot is the Thrive by Five Index. So, everybody's going crazy about the Thrive by Five Index. So, ELOM does have a place in society…It's relevant. It's needed. I’ve done it with my friends, their kids.” - Ashley Manuels
  • “I get to be part of this process…Shift and shape the future of our kids.” - Ashley Manuels
  • “I actually used…the 2021 Index, to write my Master's Literature Review… I used the reports because they were saying, I’m looking at this, and what is the problem? What is the gap? Why are children not thriving? But from an Occupational Therapist point of view…this is South African. They know our context. They understand our context. They understand our children. So this was a beautiful tool. And I wanted to know more.” - Palesa Chauke
