Stunting Rates in Children aged 50-69 months enrolled in ELPs in South Africa

Drawing on height for age measurements of over 9500 preschool children, we found stunting rates of between 5% and 7%. These rates are lower than expected and led us to investigate this further.

Since 2016 various large ELOM studies of preschool aged children in South Africa have collected data on stunting. We analysed these datasets and found relatively low rates of stunting in children aged 50 to 69 months, who attend an early learning programme.

A detailed exploration of the updated Thrive by Five Index stunting rates in children aged 50-59 months enrolled in Early Learning Programmes in South Africa is available in this research brief published in September 2022.
